Lorenzo gives tips – typical mistakes when surfing
On Thursday, Lorenzo took some time before the surf lesson to talk to the surf students about “mistakes when surfing”. He wanted to remind everyone what they should pay particular attention to in that day’s surf course. In his inimitable Italian accent, he described a photo in which a surf student was paddling too early while the wave was still about 20 metres behind her. With a wink he said: “It is not a wave – it is a nothing!” So always make sure you’re not trying to surf a wave that isn’t even there!
Later on, other important points came up that the surf instructors here on Fuerteventura emphasise again and again in the surf courses. With a wink and a smile he said: “What did we tell you 100 times during the course?” – “Look ahead, bend your knees, etc.”
The difference between a missed moment and the ride of your life
Lorenzo reminded the students that looking ahead when surfing is crucial to spot the waves in time and catch the best moment to paddle. Bending your knees correctly is also important to keep your balance on the board and stay in control.
As an experienced surf instructor, Lorenzo knows that these details can make the difference between a successful ride and a missed moment. That’s why it’s so important to keep reminding yourself what really matters in surfing.
With a broad grin he added: “Surfing is like any other art. It takes practice and attention to detail to truly master riding waves.”
So they headed to the beach with new insights and a smile on their faces, ready to conquer the waves and venture further into the fascinating world of surfing.
How important is surf theory to avoid mistakes when surfing?
The theory before surfing is very important and plays a decisive role in a safe, successful and enjoyable surf experience. Here are some reasons why theory before surfing is important:
Sicherheit beim Surfen
Theory teaches basic knowledge about the safety aspects of surfing. This includes information about currents, wave conditions, rescue techniques and possible dangers in the water. By understanding these factors, surfers can minimise risks and protect themselves and others.
Learning to understand waves
Theory helps surfers understand how waves work and the different types of breaks. This knowledge enables you to choose the best waves, find the right timing and adapt to how the waves behave.
Technique in surfing
Theory teaches surfers the basic movements and techniques needed for surfing. These include paddling technique, standing up on the board, body posture and steering. Understanding these techniques makes it easier to put them into practice in the water and helps you keep your balance.
Surfing means: “respect for nature”
Theory also promotes understanding of and respect for nature and the oceans. Surfers learn how to protect the environment and respect marine life, for example by sticking to the surfing order and avoiding litter.
Using your time in the line-up more efficiently
Theory helps surfers use their time in the water efficiently. By using their knowledge of the conditions and wave behaviour, they can choose the best waves and tire themselves out less by avoiding unnecessary mistakes.
Fun and success when learning to surf
Ultimately, theory helps make surfing more fun and a successful experience. When surfers are well prepared and have the necessary knowledge, it boosts their confidence and enjoyment of surfing.
