But there is also plenty to discover and see away from the sea. Before we introduce you to the sights of Fuerteventura, let’s start small and introduce you to our fishing village of El Cotillo with 3 well-planned tours. Even if you don’t live here, El Cotillo is always suitable for a trip to Fuerteventura.

Tour of El Cotillo 1 - The harbor tour
1 Our tour starts at La Torre de El Tostón, a small watchtower that was built in 1741 to protect against privateers. For a few euros, you can even marvel at the inside of the small watchtower, where various exhibitions are held from time to time. The Torre de El Tosten offers a wonderful view over Cotillo Beach. 2. right next to it, you can also marvel at a skeleton of a beaked whale that was found in Majanicho in 2004.
From Tostón, we set off along the new harbor, past a few small restaurants and bars where we can stop for a bite to eat. Before turning the corner, we like to take a look back and admire the bays of Cotillo Beach and the small family of palm trees hidden down by the water. 3. There are also a few old lime kilns where lime was once burned.
4 We continue on our way, always directly along the water, past the Cotillo Ocean View apartment complex to the front of the cliffs. Once we have strolled around the bend, the next beautiful view over the old harbor and the small houses of El Cotillo opens up. The beautiful view invites you to linger a few minutes longer, enjoy the peace and quiet and the view and maybe even take a photo or two.
Once you’ve seen enough of the old harbor from afar, we set off to explore it in more detail. 5. we take a leisurely stroll down the small harbor mile, past the fishermen’s monument, which was created by the artist Paco Curbelo in 2002 for the commitment of all fishermen who contribute to the development and tradition of the village. The statue depicts a woman looking out to sea, eagerly awaiting the return of the sailors.
6 On the right-hand side of the harbor, there is a small picture exhibition and the infamous “Love Boat”, which we affectionately call the “Love Boat”. This is the ideal place to soak up some sun and enjoy the day.
Still looking for a special souvenir? 7. If you take a little detour to the left, right next to the Vaca Azul through the small alley, you will come directly to Nautilus. A small studio with an adjoining store that offers some particularly beautiful souvenirs.
Tour of El Cotillo 2 - Faro del Toston
1. we start from the small square directly in front of the La Marisma restaurant. From there, we make our way directly to our favorite bakery here in town – 2. El Goloso! If you set off early in the morning, you can either have a leisurely breakfast or take a packed lunch with you for the journey.
And off we go! 3. behind the bakery is the spot known as “La Puntilla”. On days with a lot of swell, you can sometimes see experienced locals showing off their skills in the water. Beginners or surfers who don’t know the spot should rather not venture into the water there and leave the waves to the local surfers.
We take a leisurely stroll further along the sea, past the palm trees to the first small lagoon bay. 4. those who would like to cool off again have the opportunity here to splash around a bit or put their feet in the water.
We continue on our way, past the second lagoon beach, 5th Playa de la Concha and the Azzurro Chill Out Restaurant, where you can stop off on the way back, for example. But now we continue – where to? To the lighthouse of El Cotillo. You may already be able to see it from a distance. The route is perfect for a short run in the evening or in the morning. When you finally arrive, you can see on closer inspection that there are several towers and not just one lighthouse.
6 This Faro del Tostón is one of the most curious lighthouses in Fuerteventura. It doesn’t just have one tower, but three different ones. The first tower was built in 1887 (the small tower between the two larger towers), but it was soon realized that the 6m tower was not high enough to spot ships and fishermen. As a result, a new, higher tower of approx. 15m was built in the 1950s (right). From a distance, this tower is reminiscent of a chess piece. In 1985, the construction of the third tower of approx. 38m began, which was also given the typical red and white paint job. Around the Faro del Tostón, small benches and tables sheltered from the wind invite you to take a short break. Ideal for unpacking the snacks you have brought with you and enjoying the view of the surrounding bays and the sea.
If you want, you can also visit the small Museo de la Pesca afterwards, right next to the new tower. Or let off steam on the nature trail around the lighthouse. 7.
“Enjoy the view, the sun and the sound of the sea.”
Tour of El Cotillo 3 - Pictures in El Cotillo
Perhaps you have already spotted one or two large pictures on the walls of houses in Cotillo. What are these pictures all about? The photos were selected as part of a photo competition entitled “El mar que nos une” – “The sea that unites us”, to be displayed in giant format on some of Cotillo’s house walls.
A short walk through the village is the perfect way to explore these pictures. Perhaps take a walk yourself first – go on a discovery tour and see how many of the pictures you can spot. There are 12 photographs in total, spread throughout the village. 1. if you want to take a little break while you’re exploring the pictures, why not stop by the cute little café, El Mentidero?
“El mar que nos une” – “The sea that unites us”
The pictures in the village are not only beautiful, but also give the place a special touch and bring the otherwise somewhat dreary white house facades back to life. Find your personal favorite picture!
Just in case you haven’t found all the pictures, we have marked all the places on the map where there are pictures.
