Here are some more tips and tricks to help keep you safe in the water!
Warm up before you go surfing!
Warming up reduces your risk of injury and helps you perform better faster. So don’t forget to do it! Stretched and well-oxygenated muscles improve your performance in the water and help prevent strains. Running, jumping, and stretching and loosening-up exercises are therefore the best way to prepare!
Paddle your way into the lineup!
When surfing, you spend about 90% of your time paddling. To save time and energy, find a channel you can paddle through. There’s no point in paddling straight toward the breaking wave if you can paddle around it. Make the most of the remaining 10%!
Wipeout – How to fall properly while surfing!
Always be aware of where you’re surfing! At a beach break, you can easily push off the ground. At the reef, you could injure yourself on sharp edges or cracks. If you fall, jump off your surfboard! If possible, let yourself fall behind the board toward the next wave. Always jump as if you were in shallow water. Remember: “Butt first”! Never go headfirst, and always protect your head with your arms!
Underwater, stay calm!
Don’t panic! – because you’re rarely underwater for more than 5 seconds. Your body will quickly float back up on its own. Open your eyes, because the water is usually clear enough to see what’s around you. Grab your surfboard as fast as you can and let’s go!
