To learn to surf really well, you should of course also understand the structure of a wave. So here is an overview of the most important parts of a wave:

1 The Pocket

The steepest and most hollow part of the wave.
This is the largest energy zone of the wave, where you can pick up the most speed. When breaking, the wave helps you to surf up to the face. The zone where you want to stay the most.

2 The Face

The middle energy zone between the pocket and shoulder.

The part of the wave that is standing but has not yet broken forward. It is less steep than the pocket. You have good stability here, but slightly less speed and power for manoeuvres.

3 The Shoulder

The weakest energy zone, because it is far away from the pocket.y

It is not very steep and there is little energy that you can use. If you stay here too long, you will lose speed and thus your ride.

4 The Flats

The area in front of the wave towards the shore. It is completely flat and slows down the surfboard. However, it is a mandatory part for manoeuvres and turns to reach the top of the wave again.

5 The Lip

Upper part of the breaking wave – the “white water”. A very strong energy zone, a good spot for advanced surfers to gather additional energy for maneuvers.

6 The Impact Zone

The strongest energy zone of a wave, where the lip hits the water. Always try to avoid this zone if possible.
