Explore the surf village on foot

Lajares walking tour

White houses, lava-stone walls, windmills and a coffee stop along the way: our Lajares walking tour takes you through the village in northern Fuerteventura. Discover the church square, historic mills and the centre around the village square.

If you would like to explore the volcanic landscape afterwards, plan that as a separate hike. It keeps your village visit relaxed and avoids turning Calderón Hondo into an unplanned extra.

WINDMILLS · CAFÉS · VILLAGE LIFE

Small streets. Plenty of island life.

In Lajares, the memorable moments often come between the larger sights: beside an old windmill, in a little street or over a coffee. You do not need a packed itinerary to get to know the village.

Village first. Volcanoes if you have time.

The Lajares walking tour and the volcanic hike are different outings. Decide whether you want to stay in the village or add time on the trails.

Lajares walking tour: four village stops

Start at the church square and head towards the village centre. These stops give your walk a simple order; choose your own breaks and small detours. Use existing paths and take care when crossing roads.

1 · Church square and Ermita de San Antonio de Padua

The small church square is a useful starting point for your Lajares walking tour. Look at the Ermita de San Antonio de Padua from outside and enjoy this quieter part of the village.

Plan the walk so that it works without going inside the church. Check access locally, and give services and private celebrations priority.

2 · The historic windmills

Historic windmills stand near the church. They recall the role of farming and grain processing in the village’s past.

Even from outside, the mills, walls and cacti make a striking contrast with the dry landscape. Stay on public land and respect fences and private property.

3 · Village streets and a coffee break

As you head towards the centre, houses alternate with small shops and cafés. This is a good point for breakfast, a coffee or picking up supplies for later.

A break in the centre fits well before your return walk or a longer hike. If you are heading to the volcano afterwards, this is also a good place to stock up on drinking water.

4 · The village square and small discoveries

Around the village square, bring your Lajares walking tour to a relaxed finish. Browse small shops, look at local crafts or find somewhere to take a break.

When the craft market is taking place, it is worth looking around the stalls. Check current event dates before visiting; the streets and cafés are still a good reason to explore on other days.

The existing overview map also includes stops from the earlier guide outside the present village walk. Use it for extra orientation; access and individual services can change.

5 · Optional: hike to Calderón Hondo

The volcanic landscape is a rewarding addition to your Lajares walking tour, but needs its own plan. Reaching Calderón Hondo is a separate undertaking from a short stroll around the centre.

The official tourism website describes SL-FV-2 as a 5-kilometre circular route taking around 1.5 hours, with 160 metres of elevation change. These figures cover the described hiking route. Allow extra walking if you start in the village rather than at the trailhead.

Wear sturdy shoes and bring enough water and sun protection. Uneven ground, wind and sunshine can make the outing more demanding than its line on a map suggests.

Stay on permitted paths, keep away from the crater edge and do not feed wildlife. If you only have time for the village, save the hike for another day.

Plan your Lajares walking tour

Without a hire car: explore the village on foot. Check current services with TIADHE for your arrival and, especially, your return journey. Line 08 is a useful starting point when looking for connections.

By car: use permitted parking and keep entrances clear. The church square, village centre and start of a volcanic hike are different destinations; allow time to travel between them.

What to bring: water, sun protection, comfortable shoes and an extra layer on windy days. Thin beach sandals are not suitable for the additional hike.

Our FreshSurf tip: leave room for a break

For a first visit, combine the village walk with an unhurried coffee stop. Afterwards, decide whether you have the energy and enough daylight for another outing.

It gives you time to experience Lajares as a village, rather than just a starting point for the next destination. Respect the people who live here and only enter gardens or private property with permission.
