Theory before practice

First things first– before heading to the surf spot, there’s a short theory session. We gather you all in our lovely office, where you can take a seat in the theory area. Here our experienced surf coaches will brief you on topics such as safety in the water and the first steps with the board.

Armed with new knowledge, it’s time to find the right board and wetsuit. And once everything is packed in and on the van, off we go.

The surf spot is chosen depending on the group’s surf level.

Beginners tend to go to a beach break, intermediates more to a reef break. The difference lies in the ground at each beach.

At a beach break you have sand under your feet – perfect for getting to know the waves and the board.

At a reef break, as the name suggests, there’s a reef beneath you. It involves a lot of paddling, which is why it’s more of a spot for experienced surfers.

Arriving at the surf spot

Once you reach the surf spot, it’s time to put on the wetsuits. Don’t be surprised if this takes a bit longer. The suit should fit like a second skin. A little tip from us: putting a plastic bag over each foot makes it much easier to slip on.

But before you finally get into the water, there’s a short warm-up. First you’ll do some stretching, then a quick dry run of the take-off.

But first you need to work out which foot goes at the front of your board. Here we distinguish between goofy and regular. If you’re goofy, your right foot is at the front; if you’re regular, it’s your left foot.

After that, the surf coaches show you how best to stand on your board and what to pay attention to in terms of positioning and posture – until it’s finally time to head into the cool water with your board.

First steps in the water

In the water, things finally get going. Beginners can now gain their first experience with the board in the whitewater. The whitewater is where the waves have already broken – perfect for getting used to the board and making your first take-off attempts. You can also try out and practise your first paddling techniques.

Trust the process and don’t expect too much of yourself. Nobody is born a master, so don’t despair if you don’t stand up on every wave straight away. It’s all about practice, practice, practice. The most important thing is that you simply have fun. And if any questions come up or you need help, the coaches are right there. They’ll support you in the water as best they can.

After-surf routine and analysis

Sadly, every surf lesson comes to an end. Now it’s time to carry the boards back to the van and get out of the wetsuits. And once everyone is dry again, you head back to the surf office happy and satisfied.

Back at base, everyone pitches in to unload the van. The boards are brushed off and put back in their place, the leashes are neatly rolled up and stowed away, and the wetsuits are rinsed outside and hung up to dry. Then everyone gathers once more in the theory area.

After surf

Now the surf lesson is evaluated. How did you feel? What should you pay more attention to next time? What can be improved? The coaches will go through all these points with you and give you a few more tips and tricks so that nothing goes wrong next time.

If there’s still time, you can even use photo or video analysis to identify specific problems together and sort them out. And with that, you can tick your first surf lesson on Fuerteventura off your bucket list.
