The meaning of surfing

Once you’ve caught the surf bug, surfing never lets you go. Everyone has different views, associations or motivations for why surfing thrills them so much. It might be the intense experiences around the ocean, the emotions it releases or everything that comes with it.
So our guests answered the following question for us: WHAT IS SURFING TO YOU?

Here are ideas, thoughts and submissions on the topic
Surfing – or rather, trying to finally manage to surf “the wave” – means pushing my physical and mental limits. It’s such an incredibly amazing feeling to stand on the board and be carried by the power of the ocean. (I wonder what it feels like when you can really do it…)
Every time a surf holiday comes to an end, I dream of burning all my bridges here in Germany, buying a surfboard and moving to the sea (ideally to El Cotillo!) to finally learn to surf properly! But as soon as I’m back in everyday life, I realise how happy and content I actually am here!
A surf holiday always gives me so much strength and energy for back home! I’m super happy that my boyfriend has now caught the surf bug too, so we can look forward to our next trip together!
As the “only” cycling mother of a passionate surfer, surfing to me means the gap between fascination and worry about my son’s sport – but also the happiness this sport brings, which I mostly share, and gratitude for the unique moments this sport keeps giving our mother–”child” relationship, in theory and in practice.

Surfing means to me
Forgetting everything around you – it’s almost like meditating. ZEN. Stoked. Enjoying the power of nature (waves)

Surfing means to me:
Facing your fears. Venturing out of your comfort zone and pushing your limits. Whether you’re rewarded with a great ride or a heavy washing – you always go back to shore a little braver.
You live in the here and now. You enjoy every second in the water and focus on the next set on the horizon. If you dwell too much on the past or think about the future, you miss the best part! Aka: JUST LIKE IN REAL LIFE!!!

When men reach “a certain age”, they either buy themselves a hot sports car, get a young lover – or they do something completely crazy: I decided to fight ageing with the flair of the eternally young surfer.
So at almost 50, I booked a surf course with a surf school that promised surfing for all ages in its promo video – and that’s how I ended up at the Surfhouse at FreshSurf, Fuerteventura. A bit sceptical as a solo traveller among a bunch of young people, but immediately accepted and right in the middle of it all.
On that holiday I didn’t even stand properly on the board for 5 seconds, but I had 12 days of fun, completely forgot about work – and felt wonderfully young again! And the best part were the approving reactions after the holiday: “You’re so tanned – were you hiking?” “Nope, surfing!” – You usually only see those admiring, envious looks from colleagues when someone pulls up in a new sports car. Mission completed!
The following year I flew to Fuerte with my young girlfriend (so I did after all!). This year my son (19) will be coming along too.
Old fogey? – Yes, but a happy old fogey!
In two weeks I get to learn to surf with you, which for me means playing with the waves and really letting loose. Full of playfulness ahead….. And if I can look good in your clothes as well: perfect!
Yours, Karina
Fun, exhausting, often a washing machine too, getting back up again and again and never giving up!
Surfing teaches me to be patient and to celebrate the small progress.

Surfing means to me
With every wave I feel the lightness in my soul grow. People ask me why I surf – it’s way too exhausting and you spend most of the time waiting anyway. I don’t know exactly why; the only thing I notice is that I want more of these indescribably beautiful moments in which I live the moment, enjoy the moment and can focus on just one thing: surfing.

Surfing means to me:
It’s all about waiting for the wave, at sunrise or sunset, sitting on the board staring into the ocean and catching the perfect wave

To me, surfing is limitless freedom.
Travelling to all the beaches in the world and meeting new people. Pursuing the same goal together, making the impossible possible. Having fun and being there for each other when things don’t work out

Surfing means to me:
Passion! The ocean gives me warmth, a home I’d never found before. Everything changes as soon as my board touches the sea. Then my heart pounds and I feel alive and free… This feeling when you catch a wave is indescribable. That’s true happiness #zuhauseammeer

Absolute passion!!! The first time I sat on a board in France, I was hooked. How could I have lived without waves for so long? Feeling this freedom and aliveness – that’s true happiness. At the beginning I swallowed so much salt water, but when I stood up on a wave for the first time… to this day I can’t find words for that feeling. I had never experienced or felt anything like it before… A few years ago I discovered Fuerteventura for myself. I love this island. The people are so friendly, you feel at home. #zuhauseammeer, after all 🙂 You also meet so many like-minded people, and sometimes friendships even come out of it. And you meet up again, drive to Holland together, jump into ice-cold water and enjoy the waves together.
You forget everything around you, because you’re one with nature and the ocean. My heart belongs to the sea. When I’m in the water, there’s nothing but the sea and me. It wraps me in warmth. This fascination will probably stay with me my whole life. Because everything changes as soon as my board touches the water

. I’m starting secondary school now and I was a bit scared of it. With you, surfing worked really well straight away and you all called me John John. I thought that was really cool. I have a lot of fun being in the water and standing on the board. Now I’m not so scared any more.
To me, surfing is limitless freedom.
Travelling to all the beaches in the world and meeting new people. Pursuing the same goal together, making the impossible possible. Having fun and being there for each other when things don’t work out.
Lots of love from Switzerland
