Do you know that feeling when the wax starts to wear off after a few months and your board looks pretty grimy? The wax no longer has that beautiful neon yellow color—it’s turned a dull, grayish shade. That’s when it’s time to give your surfboard a fresh shine. Here’s how to best remove the wax from your surfboard:
1. Soften the wax to make it easier to remove
There are several ways to soften the wax. You can place the board in the sun, use a hair dryer, or pour warm water over it—though you should be careful with the last method, as the surface can be delicate, especially on hardboards.
It’s best to wear old clothes, since you might get a little dirty—the wax can be a bit tough to get out of your clothes.
2. Removing the wax
The best way to remove the softened wax from the board is to carefully scrape it off using a wax remover or a soft plastic scraper. Please be careful not to scratch your board and handle it gently. You can completely remove any remaining wax residue with a wax remover.
3. Apply wax
There are several techniques for waxing a surfboard: in a circular pattern, in a diagonal crisscross pattern, or in a checkerboard pattern. You’re free to choose whichever method works best for you. Here at our surf school, we usually use the diagonal crisscross method. To do this, apply the wax evenly and firmly across the board using the corner of the wax block. The board shouldn’t be too warm while you’re doing this. Every time two wax streaks meet, small wax bumps form, which provide the necessary grip.
To make sure you choose the right wax, you should check the water temperature beforehand. The warmer the conditions, the harder the wax should be.
A quick tip: Always check the external temperature of the wax.
So, when buying surf wax, be sure to check the water temperature listed.
Water temperature designation labeling
below 14° celsius cold water green label
13°-20° celsius cool water orange label
19-26° celsius warm water red label
over 25° celsius tropic water blue label
Of course, the gradations vary depending on the manufacturer, and it is also possible to apply the wax in two separate layers (base coat and top coat).
