wetsuit guide wetsuit

Without the right wetsuit, it quickly becomes icy. In your heart and on your bottom.

Do you know the feeling? You actually want to surf, but the wind is whistling, the water is cold – and after ten minutes you feel like a frozen fish stick on the move.
The solution? A wetsuit that suits you, your body and your surf spot. And no, they all look the same – but they’re not. We’ll show you what’s important – so that you not only look stylish, but also feel warm, safe and flexible.

wetsuit guide

1. Material & function – what does a wetsuit actually do?

Neoprene is a flexible rubber that holds a thin layer of water between you and the suit. Your body heat warms this water – and that’s exactly what keeps you warm. Modern wetsuits are made of light stretch neoprene, lined with fleece or nylon on the inside, and still let you paddle, pop up and laugh freely.

2. the right thickness – your wetsuit according to temperature

Material thickness

FreshSurf tip: better a bit thicker than too thin – cold muscles don’t like paddling.

3. Seams & zip – details that make a difference

  • Flatlock seams: comfortable but let water through – good for warm water
  • GBS seams (glued & blind-stitched): watertight & warm – ideal in cooler weather
  • Taped/sealed: completely watertight & durable – the premium option

Zip styles:

  • Back zip – easy to get into, but lets in more water
  • Chest zip – snug fit, good freedom of movement
  • Zipless – maximum flexibility, tricky to put on

4. Fit – your second skin

A good wetsuit fits snugly without restricting you. No air pockets, no creases. You should be able to move in it as if you had superpowers – even if the first time you put it on you feel like a sausage on a mission.

5. Sustainability – surfing with a clear conscience

Many brands now rely on environmentally friendly alternatives:

  • Yulex® natural rubber instead of petroleum-based neoprene
  • Recycled linings made from PET bottles or old tyres

6. Care – so your wetsuit lasts a long time

  • Rinse with fresh water after every session
  • Don’t hang it in direct sunlight (UV damage!)
  • Dry it inside out, ideally on a wide hanger
  • No hot water, no washing machine!

Mini FAQ about wetsuits

Neoprene suit or wetsuit?

These terms mean the same thing – German and English speakers simply search for different words.

When a shorty, when a full suit?

Shorty from about 20 °C, full suit from about 15 °C – just adjust if it’s cooler at the beach.

Why seal tape & flatlock seams?

They determine warmth and flexibility – and make your wetsuit last longer.
