Surfing in June on Fuerteventura feels a little bit like the start of summer every year. The days are getting longer, the sun shines from breakfast until sunset, and the ocean is at its most beautiful. The water is crystal clear and pleasantly refreshing, and the beaches around El Cotillo seem to move at a slightly slower pace than elsewhere.

The waves were also at their best in June. Relaxed lineups, warm temperatures, and ideal conditions made this month perfect for anyone who wanted to learn to surf or ride their first green waves.

We were especially happy to see Diana, Heike, Christian, and Nadine again. Exactly one year ago, the four of them stayed with us at the Surfhouse in El Cotillo for the first time. Back then, they didn’t know each other yet. Their shared surfing sessions, breakfasts, and conversations quickly turned into friendships that lasted well beyond their vacation.

A year later, they met again at our place on Fuerteventura—this time not as strangers, but as friends.

Stories like these never fail to move us. They remind us that a vacation sometimes leaves us with more than just fond memories. Sometimes, they lead to connections that last a lifetime.

Long summer evenings around the grill

Of course, we couldn’t miss out on a barbecue together. As the sun slowly disappeared behind the horizon, the large table filled up with salads, dips, potatoes, grilled cheese, vegetable skewers, and sausages. We laughed, shared stories, and made plans for our next adventures together.

For many guests, these evenings spent together are among the fondest memories of their vacation. Perhaps that’s because it’s never just about the food—it’s about the feeling of being part of a community.

Surfskating between sessions

If we still had enough energy left after surfing, we’d head over to the surfskate park, just a few minutes away from the surf house. There, we’d practice turns, try out new moves, and continue to refine our surfing technique on land.

Especially on windy summer afternoons, the skate park is one of our favorite places to wind down the day together.

Sunset at Calderón Hondo

A particular highlight was our hike together up the Calderón Hondo volcano near Lajares.

We set out in the early evening. With every step upward, the view opened up a little further across Fuerteventura’s rugged volcanic landscape. The wind whistled pleasantly around our ears, making even the climb in the warm evening sun feel easy. In the first photo, you can see what it might look like; in the second, what it looked like for us. Unfortunately, it was a little cloudy.

Festivities in Lajares – A Week Full of Traditions

June-at-FreshSurf-Fiesta

The Fiestas en Honor a San Antonio de Padua are among the town’s most important traditions. For several days, colorful pennants decorate the streets, small market stalls spring up in the village square, and in the evening, the town center fills with music, dancing, and the cheerful buzz of voices.

What makes it especially lovely is the blend of tradition and community. Families gather, children play at the festival grounds, and local folk groups create an atmosphere that is rarely found in tourist destinations.

If you want to experience the real Fuerteventura, you should experience this festival week at least once.

Thanks for five months of FreshSurf

June also marks the end of a very special chapter for us.

Emilia, who has been part of the FreshSurf family for the past five months, is saying goodbye to the island. Here are her farewell words to you:

A warm welcome to Emilia!

“Thank you for the wonderful time here on Fuerteventura. For the many special moments in the water, the breakfasts we shared, the barbecue evenings, and all the little experiences in between.

Above all, I would like to express my gratitude for the inspiring conversations, the encounters, and the people I had the privilege of getting to know during this time.

I’m taking home many memories, experiences, and friendships, and I’m incredibly grateful for everything I was able to experience here.

Maybe we’ll see each other again someday.

“See you on the next wave!”

Yours, Emilia
