After the first hints of summer in February, March showed its somewhat harsher side again. The wind picked up, a few rainy days dotted the weeks, and temperatures dipped a bit at times. But it was precisely this mix that made the month special and gave us the perfect opportunity to explore the island even more thoroughly.
Discoveries around the sacred mountain of Tindaya
A special excursion took us to Montaña de Tindaya, one of the island’s most mystical places, located very close to La Oliva.
The mountain itself may not be climbed, as it is considered a sacred site. Even the indigenous people of Fuerteventura, the Majoreros, regarded it as a spiritual place. But even without climbing to the summit, Tindaya has a unique effect. On a walk around the mountain, you quickly sense the special, almost serene energy that surrounds this place.
Road Trip to the South of Fuerteventura
A few days later, we headed to the southern part of the island. On Sundays, there’s a lively farmers’ market there—a real highlight for anyone who loves local produce. It’s a wonderful place to browse and sample fresh fruits and vegetables, homemade pastries, and tangy goat cheese.
After the market, we headed to the beach—Sotavento Beach, to be exact. The sun was out again, the sea was gently lapping in the background, and we could just sit back and enjoy the moment. It’s exactly this blend of activity and relaxation that makes the island so special to us, time and time again.
Sunny moments & progress in the water
By mid-month, the sun was making more frequent appearances, treating us to plenty of those perfect little island moments. We savored every single ray of sunshine—whether during breakfast outdoors, on walks, or, of course, in the water.
The surf lessons were full of highlights once again: first green waves, new progress, and plenty of happy faces in the lineup.
quiet moments, nature & relaxation
Another day trip took us to Betancuria—a small, historic village nestled in a stunning mountain landscape.
As you stroll through the narrow streets, accompanied by the chirping of birds and the view of the surrounding mountains, a deep sense of calm immediately washes over you.
To recharge our batteries, we headed to La Sombra, where we enjoyed vegan burgers while listening to live music. Afterward, of course, we couldn’t pass up a “Leche y Leche”—a Canarian coffee with so much foam and condensed milk that a spoon can stand upright in it. Sweet, creamy, and simply incredibly delicious!
Just in time for sunset, we headed back to El Cotillo—the perfect way to end a perfect day.
A special guest
In addition to all the outings and surfing sessions, there was another very special encounter in March: a guest brought along a little puppy—Ruby.
Ruby didn’t have an easy start in life. She was hit by a car on Fuerteventura, ended up at the shelter, and had to undergo surgery, which is why she still can’t put her full weight on her hind leg. But anyone who’s met her would never guess it: she’s full of energy, playful, cheeky, and incredibly full of life.
In the blink of an eye, she stole our hearts and enriched our daily lives. Ruby has now settled into her new home in Germany, and we’re sure she’s bringing just as much joy there as she did here.
We’ll carry all these memories with us into the coming month and are already looking forward to everything that lies ahead—new waves, new faces, and many more island moments just waiting to be experienced!
