SURF WITH GIANLU · Fuerteventura
Surfing should
make you happy.
The True Spirit of Surfing
It doesn’t matter whether you’re riding your first wave or have been in the water for years.
My goal is always the same:
- For you to leave the session with a smile.
- With more self-confidence.
- A deeper understanding of the ocean.
- And the feeling that this is exactly why surfing is one of the most beautiful sports in the world.
GIANLUS COACHING PHILOSOPHY
More than just a surfing lesson.
Many people just want to surf better. I want to achieve something else.
I want you to feel comfortable in the water. I want you to build confidence in yourself. I want you to understand the ocean. And I want every session to be something you look forward to. Because that’s exactly how I felt back then when I surfed my first waves in Australia.
I want to pass that feeling on to you.
Calm Instead of Pressure
With me, there’s no pressure to perform.
No ego.
No “you have to.”
I believe that people learn the most when they’re relaxed and enjoying what they’re doing.
Trust Instead of Fear
Many people come here with a sense of respect for the waves.
That’s completely normal.
Together, we’ll build confidence step by step—in the ocean, in your board, and most of all, in yourself.
Small successes quickly turn into a sense of confidence in the water.
With the Ocean, Not Against It
You can’t control the ocean. But you can learn to read it.
To understand the currents. To recognize the right moment.
And move with the energy of the waves, rather than fighting against them.
When you get the hang of it, surfing suddenly feels easy.
Joy First
Progress is important.
But progress happens fastest when learning is fun.
I want you to be tired after every session.
Exhausted.
Happy.
And full of anticipation for the next wave.
SURF COACH · FRESH SURF PARTNER
Gianlu—from Northern Italy to Fuerteventura
I grew up in a small town between Lake Como and the Italian Alps.
When I was twenty, I traveled to Australia. That’s where I stood on a surfboard for the first time. After just the first wave, I knew: This is something that will be a part of my life forever.
SURF WITH GIANLU.
More than thirteen years later, it was precisely this passion that led me to Fuerteventura. Here, I’ve rediscovered the same freedom, the same laid-back surf culture, and the same zest for life that inspired me so much back in Australia.
Today, I have the privilege of passing on exactly that—not just surfing itself, but everything that goes with it:
- Understanding the ocean.
- Building self-confidence.
- Meeting new people.
- And experiencing the joy when everything suddenly clicks and you catch your first really good wave.
For me, there’s hardly a more beautiful moment than high-fiving a student with a smile after they’ve caught a great wave.
That’s exactly why I love this job.
“Surfing isn’t just a sport. It’s a way of life. And that’s exactly what I want to share with you.”
Learn to surf. And learn to trust the ocean.
The more time you spend in the water, the more you realize: The real challenge is understanding what’s happening around you. Which wave is right for me? Where should I position myself? When should I paddle out? When is it better to let a wave pass me by?
That’s why my coaching always focuses on four things: understanding the ocean, technique, self-confidence, and mindset. And one thing that should never be lost in all of this: the fun of surfing.
Your Path to More Confidence and More Fun Surfing
Understanding the Ocean
Read the waves, recognize the currents, find the right peak, and make better decisions.
The better you understand how the ocean behaves, the less surfing will feel like a matter of chance.
Learning with Joy
For me, progress and fun go hand in hand.
You’re allowed to make mistakes, try things out, laugh, and sometimes just fall into the water. That’s exactly what creates those moments when surfing suddenly clicks.
SURF WITH THE OCEAN
You can’t control the ocean.
That was one of the most important lessons surfing has taught me. The ocean is constantly changing. The wind, tide, swell, and waves are never exactly the same. You can’t predict which wave is coming. But you can learn to recognize it.
You can adjust your position. Wait for the right moment. Make a decision. Paddle. Let go. And eventually, you’re no longer fighting the ocean. You’re surfing with it.
For me, that’s exactly where real surfing begins.
“For me, that’s exactly where real surfing begins—only when you learn to go with the flow of the ocean!”
YOUR SURF. YOUR LEVEL.
No matter what level you’re at in surfing.
No two surfers learn the same way.
That’s why our coaching doesn’t start with a set program, but with you: your skill level, your experience, your goals, and what you need in the water right now.
Beginners
You want to learn how to surf properly.
We’ll lay a solid foundation: paddling, take-off, positioning on the board, riding your first waves, and a basic understanding of the ocean.
It’s not just about standing up as quickly as possible—it’s about understanding what you’re doing and feeling comfortable while doing it.
Intermediate
You’re already surfing—but somehow you’re not making any progress.
Maybe you catch some green waves, but not consistently. Maybe you’re often in the wrong position, or the waves are getting away from you.
Together, we’ll figure out where you’re stuck right now and what we can work on specifically.
Advanced
You want to refine your surfing.
Timing, speed, turns, wave selection, or line choice: For advanced surfers, the details become finer—and at the same time, more important.
Video analysis and targeted exercises help bring these very details to light.
Children & Families
You want to go in the water together.
When it comes to children, one thing is especially important to me: fun.
We approach the water in a playful, safe, and pressure-free way, tailoring the session to age, experience, and conditions.
Because when kids come out of the water with a smile, they usually want to go back in all on their own.
YOUR NEXT STEP
Whatever makes the biggest difference for you right now.
Sometimes it’s the takeoff. Sometimes it’s your position in the lineup. Sometimes you start paddling too late or choose the wrong waves. And sometimes your technique is actually on point—but at the crucial moment, you still lack confidence. We don’t focus on ten things at once.
We find the one thing that’s making the biggest difference in your surfing right now.
- Reading Waves & Choosing Better Waves
- Positioning in the line-up
- Paddling more efficiently
- Timing when paddling toward a wave
- Take-off & board control
- Surfing green waves more safely
- Frontside & Backside Turns
- Speed & Flow
- Confidence in the Water
- Making Decisions on Your Own
The goal isn’t just for you to surf better during our session. The goal is for you to know how to keep learning on your own afterward.
BEYOND THE WATER
Sometimes the best way to learn to surf is out of the water.
In the water, everything happens incredibly fast. A wave might last only a few seconds—and what felt right to you might look completely different from the outside.
That’s why, depending on your level and goals, I also use surfskates, video analysis, and exercises on the beach.
Surfskate & Video Analysis
On the surfskate, we can repeat movements over and over again without having to wait for the next wave.
Weight transfer, rotation, bottom turns, frontside, and backside become easier to understand—and, above all, to feel.
What becomes second nature on land can later be more easily transferred to the water.
Video Analysis
When surfing, there’s a big difference between what we feel and what’s actually happening.
On video, we see your position, posture, timing, and movements from an outside perspective.
Not to look for mistakes.
But to understand what’s already working—and where a small change can make a big difference.
MY FAVORITE MOMENT IN MAY
That One High Five
Sometimes it’s the takeoff. Sometimes it’s your position in the lineup. Sometimes you start paddling too late or choose the wrong waves. And sometimes your technique is actually on point—but at the crucial moment, you still lack confidence. We don’t focus on ten things at once.
We find the one thing that’s making the biggest difference in your surfing right now.
My favorite moment as a coach?
When someone catches a really good wave. From out on the water, I can see that exactly what we’d been talking about just moments before worked out perfectly. The person paddles back—smiles—I smile—high five.
No big analysis. For a few seconds, we both just know: That was really good. Those exact moments are the reason why I’m a surf coach.
The goal isn’t just for you to surf better during our session. The goal is for you to know how to keep learning on your own afterward.
