A different kind of Christmas – out of the winter gray and into the sunlight

Winter in the city is rarely romantic. Instead of white snowflakes, there are gray skies, drizzle or fog that covers everything like a heavy blanket. Just before Christmas, there’s a hectic rush everywhere: buying presents, making plans for who is celebrating where and when, and organizing the big feast. And while Uncle Werner is once again eager to bore you with his endless stories at the dinner table, you secretly think to yourself: “I could actually use my time and money more wisely.”

Skiing? Sounds tempting, but let’s be honest, you’d have to sell a kidney to afford two weeks’ ski pass, hotel and après-ski parties. And what if there’s no snow in the end? So there you sit, in your thick jumper, longing for sunshine and asking yourself: does it really have to be like this every year?

We understand you. You are not alone with these thoughts. And that is exactly why we would like to give YOU an idea or perhaps even a solution?

So how about spending Christmas by the sea this year?
A break from everything that stresses you out.
A break from grey skies, shopping madness and family obligations.

Instead:
Sun on your face instead of rain on your back
Surfing in the ocean instead of hours in the gym
BBQ under palm trees instead of roasting in the oven
Sea breeze in your nose instead of the smell of cookies

You will celebrate many more Christmases at home with your family. They will forgive you – perhaps even indulge you – if you treat yourself to a celebration that is truly yours.

Christmas in Fuerteventura – palm trees instead of Christmas trees

Christmas feels different here – lighter, more relaxed, sunnier. While people in Central Europe rush through crowded city centres, children here stroll barefoot across the village square in El Cotillo, where fairy lights hang between palm trees and the smell of freshly grilled fish hangs in the air.

From mid-December onwards, the typical ‘belenes’ appear all over the island – lovingly designed Christmas cribs that not only show Mary and Joseph, but also fishing boats, windmills and little figures milking goats. These miniature worlds attract many visitors, especially in La Oliva and Corralejo.

Families gather for meals, bars and restaurants are festively decorated, and Spanish Christmas carols ring out in the streets. New Year’s Eve, or ‘Nochevieja’, is also celebrated – but in a more relaxed manner than elsewhere. Many people toast each other at midnight on the beach and eat one of twelve grapes with each chime of the clock – a Spanish custom for good luck in the new year.

At the beginning of the year, the Cabalgata de los Reyes – the colourful parade of the Three Kings – winds its way through the towns of the island, filling the streets with music and children’s laughter.

Christmas by the sea feels less like a duty and more like freedom here.

Advantages of Christmas by the sea

Why is it worthwhile to spend the holidays by the ocean?

  • Sunshine and warmth: While others are freezing, you can enjoy temperatures of 20–25 degrees in a T-shirt.
  • Health & energy: stock up on vitamin D, fresh air, exercise in the sea.
  • Stress-free and relaxed: no shopping marathon, no endless discussions at the festive table.
  • New traditions: barbecuing with friends instead of roast goose, palm trees instead of Christmas trees, sunsets instead of New Year’s Eve fireworks.
  • Community: You are part of a group of people who are looking for the same things as you – freedom, nature and a stress-free Christmas.

In short: Christmas by the sea gives you sunshine, freedom and serenity.

Surfing in December – perfect conditions on Fuerte

December is one of the best months for surfers in Fuerteventura. The Atlantic Ocean brings constant swells, and the beaches around El Cotillo offer perfect waves for all levels – from beginners to experienced surfers. The temperatures remain mild, the water is around 20 degrees, and with a wetsuit you can stay in the sea for hours. What’s more, there are fewer tourists than in high summer: free peaks, a relaxed atmosphere and the chance to celebrate Christmas by the sea with what could be the best session of your life.
