Christmas in Fuerteventura \u2013 palm trees instead of Christmas trees<\/strong><\/h2>\n

Christmas feels different here \u2013 lighter, more relaxed, sunnier. While people in Central Europe rush through crowded city centres, children here stroll barefoot across the village square in El Cotillo, where fairy lights hang between palm trees<\/a> and the smell of freshly grilled fish hangs in the air. <\/p>\n

From mid-December onwards, the typical \u2018belenes<\/strong>\u2019 appear all over the island \u2013 lovingly designed Christmas cribs that not only show Mary and Joseph, but also fishing boats, windmills and little figures milking goats. These miniature worlds attract many visitors, especially in La Oliva and Corralejo. <\/p>\n

Families gather for meals, bars and restaurants are festively decorated, and Spanish Christmas carols ring out in the streets. New Year’s Eve, or \u2018Nochevieja<\/g>\u2019, is also celebrated \u2013 but in a more relaxed manner than elsewhere. Many people toast each other at midnight on the beach and eat one of twelve grapes with each chime of the clock \u2013 a Spanish custom for good luck in the new year. <\/p>\n

At the beginning of the year, the Cabalgata de los Reyes<\/strong> \u2013 the colourful parade of the Three Kings \u2013 winds its way through the towns of the island, filling the streets with music and children’s laughter.<\/p>\n
