Once you’ve caught the surf bug, surfing never lets you go. Everyone has different views, associations or motivations for why surfing thrills them so much. It might be the intense experiences around the ocean, the emotions it releases or everything that comes with it.

Surfing \u2013 or rather, trying to finally manage to surf “the wave”<\/a> \u2013 means pushing my physical and mental limits. It’s such an incredibly amazing feeling to stand on the board and be carried by the power of the ocean<\/a>. (I wonder what it feels like when you can really do it…)<\/p>\nEvery time a surf holiday comes to an end, I dream of burning all my bridges here in Germany, buying a surfboard and moving to the sea (ideally to El Cotillo<\/a>!) to finally learn to surf properly<\/a>! But as soon as I’m back in everyday life, I realise how happy and content I actually am here!<\/p>\nA surf holiday always gives me so much strength and energy for back home! I’m super happy that my boyfriend has now caught the surf bug too, so we can look forward to our next trip together!<\/p>\n

Hopefully it’ll work out again early next year! For me, surfing also means hopefully having a paddle in my hand \u2013 but having just as much fun in the waves as classic surfers. As the “only” cycling mother of a passionate surfer, surfing to me means the gap between fascination and worry about<\/a> my son’s sport \u2013 but also the happiness this sport brings, which I mostly share, and gratitude for the unique moments this sport keeps giving our mother\u2013”child” relationship, in theory and in practice.

Facing your fears. Venturing out of your comfort zone and pushing your limits. Whether you’re rewarded with a great ride or a heavy washing \u2013 you always go back to shore a little braver.

When men reach “a certain age”, they either buy themselves a hot sports car, get a young lover \u2013 or they do something completely crazy: I decided to fight ageing with the flair of the eternally young surfer<\/a>.<\/p>\nSo at almost 50, I booked a surf course with a surf school<\/a> that promised surfing for all ages in its promo video \u2013 and that’s how I ended up at the Surfhouse at FreshSurf, Fuerteventura. A bit sceptical as a solo traveller among a bunch of young people, but immediately accepted and right in the middle of it all.<\/p>\nOn that holiday I didn’t even stand properly on the board for 5 seconds, but I had 12 days of fun, completely forgot about work \u2013 and felt wonderfully young again! And the best part were the approving reactions after the holiday: “You’re so tanned \u2013 were you hiking?” “Nope, surfing!” \u2013 You usually only see those admiring, envious looks from colleagues when someone pulls up in a new sports car. Mission completed!<\/p>\n
The following year I flew to Fuerte with my young girlfriend (so I did after all!). This year my son (19) will be coming along too.<\/p>\n
Old fogey? \u2013 Yes, but a happy old fogey!<\/p>\n

Setting the alarm for 4:45 am to be one of the first at the spot doesn’t exactly sound like a holiday and relaxation at first\u2026 Arriving at a spot, seeing big waves, knowing you’ll have to paddle hard today andovercome a bit of fear\/respect<\/strong> \u2013 and also knowing that you might not catch a single wave that day \u2013 that doesn’t necessarily sound like fun either.<\/div>\n<\/div>\nAnd yet for some time now I’ve been planning my holidays around surfing \u2013 not exclusively, but a little surfing always has to be part of it!<\/strong> So it’s definitely worth getting up at 4:45 am and experiencing the sunrise on the water. Simply spending time on the water, looking out for a good wave and then just enjoying that brief moment<\/strong>. With every wave I feel the lightness in my soul grow. People ask me why I surf \u2013 it’s way too exhausting and you spend most of the time waiting anyway. I don’t know exactly why; the only thing I notice is that I want more of these indescribably beautiful moments in which I live the moment, enjoy the moment and can focus on just one thing: surfing.<\/p>\n

Absolute passion!!! The first time I sat on a board in France, I was hooked. How could I have lived without waves for so long? Feeling this freedom and aliveness \u2013 that’s true happiness. At the beginning I swallowed so much salt water, but when I stood up on a wave for the first time… to this day I can’t find words for that feeling. I had never experienced or felt anything like it before… A few years ago I discovered Fuerteventura for myself. I love this island. The people are so friendly, you feel at home. #zuhauseammeer, after all \ud83d\ude42 You also meet so many like-minded people, and sometimes friendships even come out of it. And you meet up again, drive to Holland together, jump into ice-cold water and enjoy the waves together.
\nYou forget everything around you, because you’re one with nature and the ocean. My heart belongs to the sea. When I’m in the water, there’s nothing but the sea and me. It wraps me in warmth. This fascination will probably stay with me my whole life. Because everything changes as soon as my board touches the water

A bit sceptical as a solo traveller among a bunch of young people, but immediately accepted and right in the middle of it all.<\/p>\n On that holiday I didn’t even stand properly on the board for 5 seconds, but I had 12 days of fun, completely forgot about work \u2013 and felt wonderfully young again! And the best part were the approving reactions after the holiday: “You’re so tanned \u2013 were you hiking?” “Nope, surfing!” \u2013 You usually only see those admiring, envious looks from colleagues when someone pulls up in a new sports car. Mission completed!<\/p>\n The following year I flew to Fuerte with my young girlfriend (so I did after all!).
