Am späten Nachmittag des 16. März ertrank der Hawaiianer Sion Milosky, 35, in Mavericks, Nordkalifornien. Milosky gehörte zu den Shootingstars des letzten Winters. Er gewann das "North Shore Underground" Voting des Surfing Magazines, surfte an einem Outer Reef eine der größten Wellen, die jemals gepaddelt wurden und erhielt gerade seinen ersten großen Sponsor-Deal mit Volcom.

Am 16. März war Sion Milosky während eines gigantischen Late-Season-Swells "The Man" in Mavs, wie Local Skindog Collins erzählt: "Er paddelte in sechs 50-Fuß-Wellen, saß immer am tiefsten und wirkte völlig entspannt." Gegen 18 Uhr wartete Sion auf die letzte Welle des Tages. Er paddelte ein Monster genau im Bowl an und wurde niedergemäht. Das gesamte Set landete auf ihm – 20 Minuten später fand Nathan Fletcher Sion bewusstlos treibend über einen Kilometer weit in die Half Moon Bay gespült. Jeder Rettungsversuch kam zu spät.

Schließlich wurde dann auch noch eine Location direkt vor der Banzai Pipeline – direkt am Strand – errichtet.
